Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has posted another chart-topping retail result, leading sales in both Passenger and Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segments in the month of November. With an aggregate of 13 903 units sold, out of the industry total of 49 413, TSAM registered a remarkable market share of 28.1%. This is the second-highest total since coming out of the COVID-19 lockdown for TSAM.

Passenger units accounted for 8 072 sales while Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) recorded 5 457. In the LCV segment, Hilux (3 048) was – once again – the top performer while the evergreen Hiace Ses’fikile accounted for 1 944 sales in the category. Year-to-date, TSAM has garnered a total of 120 785 units and is on course to achieving 43 years of sales leadership in South Africa.

The trail-blazing Corolla Cross made a strong showing in the Passenger segment – posting a total of 2 109 units to help Toyota claim the lead in the Passenger category. Other top performers in the group included Starlet (1 322), Fortuner (937), Urban Cruiser (1 334) and Corolla Quest (764).

On the luxury front, Lexus variants garnered a total of 56 sales – including 13 ES models, 14 RX and 15 NX. Hino trucks sold a total of 332 units in November, with the 500-Series registering 118 units, the 300-Series recording 153 and the 200-Series selling 61 models. To keep Toyota, Hino and Lexus vehicles in good running condition, over 1.5 million parts pieces were supplied to the domestic dealers while a further 336 000 units were shipped outside of the country.

On new vehicle statistics for November 2022, the National Association of Automotive Manufacturers of South Africa (naamsa) said that the new vehicle market had now registered its eleventh consecutive month of year-on-year growth. Aggregate domestic new vehicle sales in November 2022, at 49 413 units reflected an increase of 7 618 units, or 18.2%, from the 41 795 vehicles sold in November 2021. Export sales recorded an increase of 13 479 units, or 64.7%, to 34 310 units in November 2022 compared to the 20 831 vehicles exported in November 2021.

Reflecting on TSAM sales, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM Leon Theron said: “The incredible loyalty shown by our customers over more than half a century has enabled us to achieve an outstanding share of the local market. We are thankful to our fleet owners and rental companies for their continued support in these trying economic times. We are also grateful to our Dealer Network, as well as all Toyota staff, for their sterling efforts in making Toyota such a competitive brand.”
