The Road Safety Partnership South Africa (RSP-SA) is hosting their annual AGM in February. In addition to an address by the chairperson and an update on the current state of affairs at the non-profit organisation, there will also be presentations from international speakers.
The AGM will provide both information on the current state of the RSP-SA and something extra for those in attendance. The RSP-SA explains: “International speakers will include an address and message of support from the CEO of the international GRSP organisation based in Geneva Switzerland, David Cliff. Cliff will address the ‘Global trends in road safety and interventions leading to 2030.’
“The success in reducing road fatalities and keeping them low has been seen in many countries internationally and shows it is possible to avoid high fatality rates. Cliff’s experience in numerous countries means he is ideally placed to provide a perspective and experience in successful trends that reduced road fatalities as we head toward an objective of reducing road fatalities by 50% by 2023.”
The second international speaker will be Maria Segui-Gomezfrom the Institute of Barcelona. “Maria will present on ‘Debunking on 95% human error’ As a tenured professor in preventive medicine and public health, Segui-Gomez’research focuses on the prevention of injuries, mostly those as a result of road traffic crashes.
“Segui-Gomez provides a view on a commonly known statistic that 95% of crashes could be avoided because they are as a result of human error. She draws from her research conducted at numerous leading universities across the world that focuses on reducing injury as a result of traffic crashes. Segui-Gomez’ success in reducing road fatalities by 18% in Spain leads credence to her presentation.”
A South African perspective is provided by the Executive Manager- Road Safety, Stakeholder Relations Management and Marketing, Thabiso Ndebele, from the Department of Transport. “Ndebele will provide insight into the ‘Road Traffic Management Co-operation on National Road Safety Strategy.’
“The AGM will be an important event to not only update all committed to road safety in South Africa on essential issues concerning the RSP-SA but is also combined with international and local perspectives on road safety. The RSP-SA encourages all to attend and play their role in improving road safety,” says the RSP-SA.
