Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has kicked off the 2023 retail calendar with a commendable total of 12 532 units sold in January. This accounts for a remarkable market share of 28.8% out of the 43 509 units sold in South Africa. Toyota is also pleased to have led sales in Passenger, Light Commercial as well as Medium Commercial vehicle segments.
Hilux (2 769) and Hiace (1 257) maintained supremacy in their respective categories, helping Toyota amass a total of 4 674 units in the LCV segment. The retail breakdown for the former was 1 434 Double Cab, 915 Single Cab and 418 Xtra Cab variants.
Shooting the lights out in the passenger segment was Corolla Cross with 2 042 units and the Starlet with 2 037 models retailed. Toyota’s popular SUVs Urban Cruiser and Fortuner posted total sales of 839 and 710 respectively, while the Land Cruiser duo of LC 300 and Prado posted 308 and 162 apiece. On the luxury front, Lexus sold an aggregate of 51 models. In total, 7 595 Passenger models were sold last month.
Not to be outdone, TSAM’s truck division Hino started the year off with a retail total of 209 units – including 101 examples of 500 Series, 68 models of 300 Series while the 200 Series notched up 40 units.
Commenting on January sales, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (naamsa) says: “Aggregate domestic new vehicle sales in January 2023, at 43 509 units reflected an increase of 2 006 units, or 4.8%, from the 41 503 vehicles sold in January 2022. The January 2023 new Passenger car market at 31 072 units had registered an increase of 873 cars, or a gain of 2.9%, compared to the 30 199 new cars sold in January 2022.
Domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini-buses at 10 622 units during January 2023 had recorded an increase of 998 units, or a gain of 10.4%, from the 9 624 Light Commercial Vehicles sold during January 2022.”
