TOYOTA GAZOO Racing SA’s GR Cup, is set to continue this weekend at the Killarney Race Circuit in Cape Town. This is round 2 of the 2023 GR Cup, and six of the country’s best motoring writers will again compete in the Cup, driving Toyota GR86 road cars that have been modified slightly to make them suitable for track racing.

Following an exciting first round, which was dominated by Thomas Falkiner (TimesLIVE), the competition is expected to be fierce as drivers look to earn valuable points in their quest for the GR Cup title. However, Falkiner, who raced in the opening round as a once-off for 2023, will not be racing this weekend, and his colleague Denis Droppa, will be taking the wheel in his place. Droppa has big boots to fill, as Falkiner’s performance last time out was impressive.

The other competitors include Mark Jones (Citizen), Brandon Staniforth (Maroela Media), Setshaba Mashigo (ASAMM), Reuben van Niekerk (Jumping Kids/Wheels24), and Chad Luckhoff (Auto Trader). Mashigo finished second in both heats of the opening round, while Jones and Staniforth had an intense on-track battle in both races, trading blows for the final podium position.

With the GR 86 cars evenly matched, the drivers will be judged solely on their driving skills, making for a thrilling race experience for both drivers and spectators alike. This weekend’s weather looks cold and wet at Killarney, which is sure to keep all the drivers on their toes, especially given the rear-wheel-drive layout of the GR 86.

“We’re excited to be hosting the GR Cup at Killarney Race Circuit this weekend,” said Riaan Esterhuysen, Toyota SA Motors’ newly appointed Senior Manager: Toyota Product PR and Toyota Gazoo Racing. “This event showcases some of the country’s best motoring writers and their driving skills. We’re expecting a thrilling race, and we can’t wait to see who comes out on top.”

The event is open to the public, and tickets are available for purchase at the Killarney Race Circuit gates. Gates open at 9 am on Saturday, March 18th, with the race set to begin at 12 pm. Fans can expect a day filled with high-speed thrills, exciting racing, and plenty of entertainment.

Ends.
